More or Fewer Game
Focus: Comparing quantities
This simple game helps children practise comparing amounts and using important maths language like more, fewer, and equal.
Equipment you’ll need:
A handful of counters in two colours (e.g. red and yellow).
A flat surface such as a table or tray.
How to play:
Choose teams: one player is Team Red and the other is Team Yellow.
Take a handful of counters and scatter them on the table.
Count how many each player has.
Ask: “Who has more? Who has fewer?”
Extension idea:
Flip some counters over or move them around to make the amounts equal. This introduces the idea of balance and fairness.
Why it matters:
Understanding more, fewer, and equal is a core maths skill that underpins later learning in addition, subtraction, and problem-solving. Playing with comparisons in a fun way also builds confidence in using mathematical language during everyday activities.
