Mini Number Stories
Focus: Addition and subtraction through play
Bring maths to life with simple storytelling. This activity uses counters to act out mini number stories, helping children understand addition and subtraction in a fun, meaningful way.
Equipment you’ll need:
A handful of counters (or small objects in two colours, e.g. buttons, blocks, or beads).
A flat surface such as a table or tray.
How to play:
Use counters to tell a short story. For example: “3 red apples were on the tree. 2 fell down. How many are left?”
Flip the counters over or move them as the story changes.
Encourage your child to say what’s happening with the numbers.
Extension idea:
Let your child make up their own story! For example: “4 yellow cars were in the garage. 1 drove away. How many are still there?”
Why it matters:
By linking numbers to everyday stories, children begin to understand that maths is part of the world around them. This activity builds early skills in addition, subtraction, and problem-solving, while also encouraging creativity and language development.
