Mini Number Stories

Focus: Addition and subtraction through play

Bring maths to life with simple storytelling. This activity uses counters to act out mini number stories, helping children understand addition and subtraction in a fun, meaningful way.

Equipment you’ll need:

  • A handful of counters (or small objects in two colours, e.g. buttons, blocks, or beads).

  • A flat surface such as a table or tray.

How to play:

  1. Use counters to tell a short story. For example: “3 red apples were on the tree. 2 fell down. How many are left?”

  2. Flip the counters over or move them as the story changes.

  3. Encourage your child to say what’s happening with the numbers.

Extension idea:

Let your child make up their own story! For example: “4 yellow cars were in the garage. 1 drove away. How many are still there?”

Why it matters:

By linking numbers to everyday stories, children begin to understand that maths is part of the world around them. This activity builds early skills in addition, subtraction, and problem-solving, while also encouraging creativity and language development.
