Counting and Sorting Game

Focus: Counting, colour recognition, fine motor skills

Looking for a quick and fun way to practice early maths skills at home? This counting and sorting activity is perfect for children aged 2–5.

Equipment you’ll need:

  • A handful of counters (or small objects in different colours, e.g. buttons, blocks, or beads).

  • A flat surface like a table or tray.

How to play:

  1. Scatter a handful of counters on the table.

  2. Ask your child to:

    • Count how many there are altogether.

    • Sort them by colour: “How many red? How many yellow?”

    • Line them up to make “colour trains.”

Extension idea:

Hide some counters under a cup and ask, “How many are missing?” This introduces the idea of subtraction in a playful way.

This activity develops early counting skills, colour recognition, sorting, and fine motor control, all essential for building a strong foundation in maths.
