5 Easy “One Less” Games for Preschoolers

Learning subtraction does not have to mean worksheets or sums on a page. For preschoolers, the best way to understand the idea of “one less” is through play, songs and everyday routines.

At Jump Start Maths, we use fun, active games to help children explore the concept of taking away. Here are five simple activities you can try at home with your little one, no special equipment needed.

1. Five Little Ducks

This classic song is a brilliant way to introduce subtraction.

  • Start with five toy ducks (or any small toys).

  • Each verse of the song, take one away.

  • Count how many are left together.

Emphasise the language: “We had 5, one went away, now we have 4. That is one less.”

2. Snack Time Subtraction

Turn snack time into a maths game.

  • Give your child a small plate of fruit (for example 5 grapes).

  • Ask them to eat one and count how many are left.

  • Keep going until the plate is empty.

They will love that eating is part of the maths.

3. Teddy Train

Line up a group of teddies or dolls in a train.

  • Pretend you are stopping at stations.

  • At each stop, one teddy gets off.

  • Count how many are still on the train.

This brings subtraction to life with storytelling.

4. Toy Basket Subtraction

This works well with just one child at home.

  • Place 5 favourite toys in a basket.

  • Ask your child to take one out and count how many are left.

  • Repeat until the basket is empty.

For nurseries, this can be adapted into a small group circle game where each child removes a toy in turn.

5. Block Towers

  • Build a tower of 5 blocks.

  • Take one away.

  • Count how many remain.

  • Repeat until the tower is gone.

This gives a clear, hands-on way to see subtraction in action.

Why “One Less” Matters

Understanding “one less” is an important first step in subtraction. It helps children:

  • Recognise patterns in numbers

  • Build early problem-solving skills

  • Gain confidence with counting backwards

At Jump Start Maths, we weave subtraction into fun games like our Disappearing Ducks Pond Game. Children do not even realise they are doing maths, they are just playing, moving and having fun.
