Why Counting to 10 Isn’t the Most Important Early Maths Skill

If your 2 or 3-year-old can confidently count to 10, you might think they’re already doing brilliantly with numbers.

And they are developing an important skill.

But being able to recite the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… isn’t the same as understanding what those numbers mean.

Early maths is much bigger than counting.

So what other maths skills matter?

Before children start school, they are developing many mathematical ideas through everyday play and experiences.

🔢 Understanding quantity

One of the most important foundations is understanding that numbers represent how many.

A child might be able to say “1, 2, 3, 4, 5” but still need lots of experience matching those number words to actual objects.

Try giving your child five cars and asking:

“How many cars are there?”

Can they count each one once and understand that the final number tells them the total?

This is very different from simply reciting the counting sequence.

👀 Subitising

Subitising is the ability to recognise a small quantity without counting each object individually.

For example, if you show your child:

Can they instantly recognise that there are three?

You can practise this naturally with dice, fingers, snacks, toys or objects you spot while you're out and about.

➕ Comparing quantities

Children also need opportunities to notice when groups are more, less or the same.

You could put two strawberries on one plate and five on another and ask:

“Which plate has more?”

You don't always need to ask children to count. Encourage them to look, compare and explain how they know.

🔷 Shape and space

Early maths isn't just about numbers.

Children are also developing their understanding of shape, space and position.

Can they recognise a circle? Can they spot a triangle when it is turned around? Can they describe something as being under, behind, next to or inside?

Building with blocks, completing puzzles and playing with shape sorters can all provide valuable mathematical experiences.

🔄 Patterns and connections

Patterns are another important part of early mathematical development.

Try:

clap, stomp, clap, stomp...

Can your child continue the pattern?

You can also make patterns with toys, colours, sounds or objects around the house.

🧠 Problem-solving and reasoning

Perhaps most importantly, children need opportunities to think mathematically.

Rather than always giving them the answer, ask questions such as:

  • “How do you know?”

  • “Can you find another way?”

  • “What do you think will happen?”

  • “Which one has more?”

  • “How could we make them the same?”

This encourages children to explain their thinking and develop their problem-solving skills.

So, should my child be able to count to 10?

Counting is absolutely worth developing.

But don't worry if your 2 or 3-year-old isn't racing through the numbers yet, and don't assume that a child who can count to 20 automatically has a strong understanding of numbers.

Early mathematical development is complex. Children develop different skills at different times and often develop several skills simultaneously.

The goal isn't simply to produce a child who can recite a long string of numbers.

It's to help them understand quantity, notice patterns, compare, reason, solve problems and make connections.

And the good news?

You don't need worksheets or formal lessons to do this.

Early maths can happen while you're:

  • Sharing snacks

  • Walking up the stairs

  • Building with blocks

  • Tidying toys

  • Playing with playdough

  • Looking for shapes

  • Singing songs

  • Reading stories

  • Setting the table

Everyday play is full of mathematical opportunities.
