Race to Fill the Frame (with Dice)

Focus: Counting on, addition, and turn-taking

This exciting ten frame game adds a dash of competition while building early addition and counting skills. It’s perfect for children who love games and friendly challenges!

Equipment you’ll need:

  • Ten frame (from your Starter Pack)

  • Counters or cubes

  • Dice (one or two)

  • Optional: Whiteboard to record totals

How to play:

  1. Give each player a ten frame and a set of counters.

  2. Take turns rolling the dice.

  3. Add that many counters to your frame.

  4. Keep rolling until someone fills their frame — they’re the winner!

Extension idea:

Use two dice to practise addition and count on from the first roll. You can also play cooperatively, roll together and see how many turns it takes to reach 10.

Why it matters:

This game builds key early maths skills: counting on, recognising dice patterns (subitising), and understanding addition to 10. It also develops turn-taking and patience, great for school readiness.
